The most (In)famous gladiator
The first name that comes to mind when thinking of famous gladiators is Spartacus. Little is known of his upbringing, but it is believed he was of Thracian origin. At one point, he served as a Roman soldier but was later sold into slavery. Due to his combat skills and physical fitness, he was sent to a gladiator school in Capua. Brutal discipline and abuse were the norm in such places, also known as ludi where he certainly received his share.
But rather than accepting a brutal fate and dying in the arena for the pleasure of idle crowds, he chose to fight for his freedom. Along with 70 other gladiators, he escaped Capua and found refuge on Mt. Vesuvius. Their example was followed by many slaves who joined them, swelling the numbers to an astonishing 100,000! Spartacus soon became the leader of the rebellion, but after some initial success, the fury of the Roman legions smashed his army. 6,000 rebels survived, only to be crucified along the Appian Way, from Rome to Capua.
However, the legend of Spartacus still lives, primarily thanks to Stanley Kubrick's film Spartacus (1960), but also many other TV shows, books, and video games.
