ESCAPE THE HEAT, ESCAPE THE CROWDS

Our Early Morning Colosseum Tour lets you enjoy the site without the crowds and the heat. Visit early to experience the amphitheater in cooler, quieter conditions - perfect for beating the summer heat. This is the most comfortable and peaceful way to see the Colosseum.

AVOID LONG WAITING TIMES

In peak season, visitors can wait for over an hour to enter the Colosseum. But with our Colosseum Early Morning Tour, you’ll avoid that. We provide you with skip-the-line access! You’ll enter the site immediately through a separate entrance.

EXPERT GUIDE BY YOUR SIDE

You will be accompanied by an expert guide throughout the entire tour experience. Learn interesting history about the gladiatorial combats and animal fights that happened hundreds of years ago inside the Colosseum.

SEE EVERY CORNER OF THE COLOSSEUM

An early-morning tour means fewer visitors, which automatically means a better view. On our Colosseum Early Morning Tour, there won’t be any crowds blocking your eyesight. You can get up close to the ancient walls and really examine every carving and every stone in detail.

PRO TIP

Even though it’s an early tour, the Colosseum still gets bright very quickly once the sun rises. If you want the best photos, try to take them early in the visit while the light is still soft. Once the sun is higher, the harsh contrast will make your photos look either blown out from the glare or completely lost in dark shadows.

Such a peaceful, relaxing tour of the Colosseum!

We took the Colosseum Early Morning Tour at 9 am, and we felt like we and our small group were the only people there - there was almost no one around! The lack of crowds really made for a quiet, easygoing tour. No rushing, but not taking too long either. I think it would have been much more hectic if we had gone in the afternoon.

I learned so much about gladiators and emperors

This is the most I’ve learned on any tour ever! Our guide Mario told us all about the Colosseum’s history: the gladiators, the supposed naval battles, the executions, the wild animals…I walked away imagining what the arena must have sounded like with 50,000 people shouting during a gladiator fight. It’s really powerful to think about - I recommend everyone take this tour!

DESCRIPTION

Colosseum Early Morning Tour

COLOSSEUM WITHOUT THE CROWDS AND THE RUSH

Your tour guide will lead you through the 1st and 2nd levels of the Colosseum. Enjoy the beauty of this impressive landmark in a peaceful atmosphere, accompanied only by your tour group and your guide. With no crowds, you’ll have the opportunity to get a closer look at the impressive stone walls and carvings.

LEARN ALL ABOUT EMPERORS AND GLADIATORS

While exploring, your guide will teach you about the Colosseum’s history. For example, did you know that gladiators didn’t only fight one another? They would also battle wild animals like lions and panthers! For example, the emperor Trajan hosted 123 days of games in the Colosseum, during which around 11,000 animals died.

EXECUTIONS AT THE COLOSSEUM?

Yes, the Colosseum was also used as a place for executions, as a warning to citizens what would happen when they break the law. Your guide will explain the different types of executions: by fire, by sword, crucifixion, being thrown to animals, etc.

EXPLORE THE ROMAN FORUM AND PALATINE HILL

After your tour of the Colosseum, your tour guide will provide you with access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. You’re then free to explore these sites at your own pace. Since it’ll still be morning, it should be a peaceful stroll without any crowds. Right next to the Colosseum, the Roman Forum was the center of ancient Rome. Elections, public speeches, triumphal marches, and more all took place here. Palatine Hill is also nearby. The centremost of Rome’s seven hills, here you’ll find several residences from the Roman Empire, like the Palace of Domitian, the House of Tiberius, etc.

Did you know about the Colosseum's strict schedule?

The Colosseum’s schedule consisted of three distinct events. In the morning were the Venationes - the battles with wild animals. During these shows, gladiators would re-enact dramatic hunting scenes with various dangerous beasts.

After that, the executions would happen around midday. It was only after the executions, in the early afternoon, that the typical gladiator vs. gladiator events happened. Unsurprisingly, these gladiator shows were always the main event. If you’d like to see in detail what these events looked and sounded like, consider booking Colosseum Virtual Reality Tour.

FAQ - Colosseum Early Morning Tour

Is it better to go to the Colosseum in the morning or evening?

There are huge crowds of tourists at the Colosseum during the day. However, in the morning, there are much fewer visitors. This means you can truly enjoy the beautiful amphitheater in peace and quiet and give your guide your full attention. Besides, an early visit leaves you with more time for a full day of exploring other attractions. For example, you might consider booking Rome Zoo Tickets for a completely different experience in the green surroundings of Bioparco di Roma.

How do you avoid lines at the Colosseum?

As you may know, the Colosseum often has long lines, especially in the afternoon. Fortunately, our Early Morning Colosseum Tour includes skip-the-line access. This means you won’t have to wait at the entrance and can explore the site without the usual crowds as soon as you enter.

What else should I visit while in Rome?

Besides exploring the Colosseum during the daytime, you should also book a Colosseum Night Tour and discover how magnificent it looks during the nighttime. However, if you wish to explore Rome in a quick and easy way, you should book the Hop-On Hop-Off Rome Bus Tour. Also, you should not miss the opportunity to explore the magnificent Vatican Museums and see Michelangelo's famous frescoes inside the Sistine Chapel. That is why we suggest booking Vatican Pass, which includes skip-the-line access and the best value for your money!
