Learned so much on this Colosseum Arena Floor tour!

I'm so glad that I was able to step onto the Arena Floor of the Colosseum. I said that out loud because, as a woman, in ancient Roman times, this is something I wouldn't have had the chance to do. To my surprise, our expert guide told us stories about female gladiators. They actually existed! This tour of the Colosseum was amazing, I learned so much!

Absolutely worth booking this tour!

I enjoyed this guided tour from the beginning to the end. We didn't have to queue or wait in lines, wasting hours - we came straight into the Colosseum through the gladiator's gate. Our guide was fantastic and he told us many stories about the gladiators and their lives. He also gave us headsets so that we could hear him loud and clear, and he spoke English very well, which I'm grateful for!

Gladiator Gate Colosseum Tour

SURVIVING GIANT OF THE ANCIENT ROME

On this Colosseum Arena Floor Tour, you will gain skip-the-line access and walk straight into the arena. Your expert guide will tell you tales and legends of gladiatorial combat, wild animal hunts, the execution of criminals in front of bloodthirsty crowds, and many other fascinating details. So, be prepared to learn a lot about the rich history of this iconic structure, which is instantly recognizable all over the world.

LIBITINA, THE GLADIATOR'S GATE

Entering the Colosseum through the gladiator's gate, also known as Libitina, you will have a chance to see the arena floor from a gladiator's perspective. Named after the goddess of funerals, this was the gate through which the bodies of those who didn't survive the fight were carried out. Standing in the middle of the gladiator arena, you will be able to enjoy a 360-degree view of the Colosseum, ideal for snapping some truly unique pictures. This is a rare opportunity, as only a limited number of visitors can be there for a given amount of time!

WHO SAT WHERE IN THE COLOSSEUM?

The place where each person was seated in the Colosseum was not arbitrary but reflected their social status. As expected, the best seats, those closest to the arena floor, were reserved for the Emperor and his family. On this tour, you will be guided to the second tier of the arena, reserved for wealthy merchants and upper-class ancient Roman citizens. Book this tour to hear more about the class representation in the Colosseum!

EXTRA TIME TO EXPLORE

After finishing your guided tour, you will have an extra 30 minutes to explore the Colosseum on your own. Or, if you want, you can stroll around the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill. These three individual sites, included in this Colosseum Arena Floor Tour, together make up the heart of the Roman Empire! And if you're still not sure what to do after the Colosseum, consider one of the Rome Bike Tours: most start nearby and take you through quieter streets for a different view of the city.

Colosseum Arena Floor Tour

Daily life of a gladiator

When we hear the word gladiator, we often imagine them in the middle of a fight on the arena floor. But did you know that they did that „only“ 3-5 times a year? So what did they do in between the fights?

They lived in barracks called „ludi“ and followed a strict discipline of practicing combat skills, sparring with fellow gladiators, or working on physical fitness. Their routine included rest and recovery from intense training sessions and preparing their bodies for upcoming fights. They were served three meals a day, rich in carbs and plant protein, typically beans and barley. They consumed little meat and fish, as those were more expensive for their owners.

A gladiator wasn't just a fighter; he was a showman, often trained in music or performance arts to entertain the crowds during breaks. They also became close friends with their fellow gladiators, with the full knowledge that they may have to fight them to the death in the Colosseum someday.

Their lives weren't easy, but through discipline, experience, and a bit of luck, they could earn fame, a lot of money, and eventually, their freedom! If you want to learn more, be sure to book the Colosseum Arena Floor Tour.

What sights are included in this Colosseum Arena Floor tour?

After entering the Colosseum, you will visit the ground level and the arena floor. You will also have access to the second tier, from which you can take in a spectacular view of the surrounding historical landmarks.

Can I continue exploring on my own after the Colosseum Arena Floor tour?

Yes! Following your guided tour, you will get the chance to stroll through the Roman Forum for 30 minutes while taking in breathtaking views of the historic ruins from Palatine Hill.

Is the Arena floor the same as the Underground Colosseum?

No, the Arena floor and the Underground Colosseum are not the same. The Arena floor is the central stage where the gladiators fought. The Underground Colosseum, often referred to as the Hypogeum, is the network of tunnels and chambers beneath the arena floor, where gladiators and animals were held before contests began.

What other Roman attractions should I visit?

There's a lot to see while in Rome. An unforgettable way to see the city is riding a Vespa, Italy's most iconic motorcycle, on a Rome Vespa Tour! There's also the Vatican & Colosseum combo tour, which offers great value for your money! It includes access to the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and the amazing St. Peter's Basilica! There is one more special tour that we recommend, the Colosseum Underground tour. A vast network of 2,000-year-old underground tunnels and hidden chambers, where animals and gladiators were kept before their fights on the arena floor!
