Unforgettable visit to the Colosseum thanks to our guide!
The guide we had was a great storyteller. I feel like the tour wasn't basic, he added many fun facts and anecdotes about the Colosseum and Rome. He even told us some stories about his own life, because he's from Rome. I feel like I also learned a lot about the locals and today's Rome, not just ancient Rome. The Colosseum was amazing, it kind of looked bigger from the inside! We got to visit Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum, too, so this ticket is a great deal!
Convenient skip-the-line access
Booking this guided tour of the Colosseum was a good decision because we learned so much that we would never have discovered on our own. The tour was well-organized, and we got in right away with the skip-the-line tickets. On the day we visited, the Colosseum lines were huge! I'm so glad we managed to avoid them all!

JOURNEY THROUGH ANCIENT ROME WITH AN EXPERT
Did you know that the Colosseum wasn't always called that. Its name was the Flavian Amphitheater, named after the emperors of the Flavian dynasty who built it. It was so big that about 50,000 Romans could attend events in the amphitheater! So, sometime after the 8th century, people started calling the building the Colosseum because of its huge size.
DIFFERENT CLASSES OF GLADIATORS
There were many classes of gladiators. Some fought with the national weapons, which included an oblong shield, a visor, a helmet, and a short sword. Others fought with a net and a trident and no armor, and they were supposed to entangle a fully armed opponent. Some are also believed to have fought on horseback with a helmet and a closed visor. In other words, they had to fight blindfolded.
DID ALL GLADIATORS LOVE THEIR JOB?
The gladiators were mainly slaves and criminals, made to fight each other. The combats were bloody and not fair, and they make us wonder why humans ever set up shows like that. Even the gladiators themselves didn't like them because there was a Gladiatorial War against Rome in the 1st century BCE led by Spartacus. Your guide will tell you all about the history of gladiatorial combat and the ancient Romans' opinions on the topic.

A preview of what you will learn
- The Colosseum was in active use for only about 400 years out of the nearly 2,000 it has stood in Rome. After that, it was neglected and seen as a source of building materials until the 18th century.
- We can only see one-third of the original building, as two-thirds have been destroyed over time.
- Materials from the Colosseum were used to build St. Peter's Basilica.
- The majority of gladiators were men, but there were some women, too.
- Why does it look like the Colosseum is missing a big chunk? There was a big earthquake in the 14th century and a huge section of the outer walls collapsed.
