Amazing guide & no waiting in lines!

We had a great guide on this tour, and it wouldn’t have been as good without her! She was very knowledgeable and passionate, and she shared a lot about the history of the Colosseum and the art in the Vatican Museums. My favorite part was listening to her stories in the Colosseum. We had skip-the-line tickets, which was great to have on vacation. All in all, I highly recommend this tour!

We learned a lot on this tour!

This was an amazing tour! We had plenty of time to see everything in the Vatican Museums and it was amazing to walk inside the Colosseum! The best part about this tour is the money we saved because multiple places are included! Also, we didn't have to wait in line, which was a huge relief!

DESCRIPTION

Colosseum & Vatican Tour

IN THE SHOES OF GLADIATORS AND EMPERORS

Take a tour of the Colosseum and see where the famous gladiators fought for their lives in ancient Rome. Most were criminals or slaves, but even free citizens participated in battles on the arena floor. Lots of them signed contracts with gladiator schools that were supposed to train them in combat in hopes of gaining glory and money. While some were desperate for the money, some were even a part of the upper classes of Roman society: patricians, knights, and senators.

SEE THOUSANDS OF ART PIECES IN THE VATICAN MUSEUMS

There is so much art to see in the Vatican Museums. You can see Raphael's "School of Athens", which we often see in textbooks. The painter added famous historical figures in his painting, namely, da Vinci as Plato, Bramante as Euclid and he even added himself in the painting, staring directly at the viewer. Many outstanding sculptures are exhibited in the many rooms of the Vatican Museums. For instance, the "Apollo Belvedere", a 2nd-century copy of an ancient Greek statue. According to one source, the original bronze statue was once located on the Agora in Athens. Another notable statue is the "Apoxyomenos", which shows an ancient Greek athlete cleaning his body. It is a Roman copy from the 1st century of another ancient Greek statue. Our guided tour of the Vatican Museums includes a lot of information about all the art and will help you put everything into perspective.

LOOK UP AT THE SISTINE CEILING

The Sistine Chapel was built in the 15th century for Pope Sixtus IV, which is where its name comes from. Michelangelo painted the ceiling at the beginning of the 16th century. It shows events from the Old Testament. Michelangelo's "The Last Judgment" was revealed in 1541 and was inspired by Dante's "The Divine Comedy". You can also see frescoes portraying events from Jesus's life by Botticelli, Pinturicchio, Perugino, and others. Skip the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel queues and enjoy a stress-free visit.

Colosseum & Vatican Tour

A taste of what you will hear on this tour

One really interesting fact about the Colosseum is that it was also supposed to be a wool factory! In the 16th century, Pope Sixtus V, known as the builder of Renaissance Rome, had plans to turn the Colosseum into a wool factory. Workshops were supposed to be built on the arena floor and the upper stories of the huge structure would have been spruced up for the workers to live there. Due to the huge costs, though, the project was abandoned after the pope died in 1590.

Furthermore, as nobody was taking care of the Colosseum, it used to be popular with botanists because many different plants grew here. Since the 17th century, 337 species have been identified.

The Sistine Chapel's ceiling is well preserved. Only one small part is missing. It fell and shattered in 1797 when a gunpowder depot nearby exploded.

Book the Colosseum and Vatican Tour to learn more about these important landmarks from a knowledgeable guide!
